Two Thousand Seasons
Published in Hardcover by Third World Press (December, 1981)
Authors: Ayi Kwei Armah, Jabari Mahiri, and Dorothy Carter
Average review score:

The Best Book Ever Written
This book plainly states the path to rejuvenation of African people...return to the way, our way...meaning return to African culture which gives African people strength...the strength that allowed us to create kingdoms and full fledged civilizations, intellectual centers before Europe existed. The first page brought tears to my eyes. I read this book every day as if I was married to it. It will resurrect you with its imagery and rejuvenate your spirit...and simply reconnect you with your African self. It is poetry, it is music...it is drums beating inside your soul. Read this book, and buy it for all of your friends.

A MUST!!
If you're lucky enough to get a hold of this book-Treasure It!. It's currently out of print, but it is by far the most important book I have ever read.

Riveting and Soul Stirring
This is a literature in its truest form, the words, the style of writing, so beautiful, so mesmerizing, as the words take form, taking you on this journey. I have to admit, i found the first couple of chapters a difficult read. Its packed! You understand so much and yet so little, as you read on, it nicely unravels its mysteries.

As is obvious from other reviews, TTS is hard to sum up. I try.

It is a soulful journey into the greed, materialism, pain, struggle, betrayal, pride and beauty of the continent, everyone is present, the Nigerian, Ghanian, South African etc. Destruction reigns and can only be uprooted by returning to "the way, our way". A glimmer of hope is offered by the rise of a few visionaries who come to see the truth of this, and stand determined to fight the good fight, the fight against destruction.

Nevermind that it was first published c.1974, the wisdom contained in this book remains poignant. Few see. Some of these lack true conviction to take action. "The way" largely remains shunned and despised. Zombism is crowned, as mindless following remains the order of the day.

I strongly recommend buying this book, and please read it. My review does it very little justice. Also, if you have not been fortunate to read 'The Beautiful Ones are not yet Born' then please do so.

If Love Is a Game, These Are the Rules
Published in Audio Cassette by Bantam Books-Audio (12 October, 1999)
Author: Cherie Carter-Scott
Average review score:

MEN TAKE NOTE
As a man, I am critical of some of the self-help books written by women. Invariably, I find elements that either misrepresent men's attitudes or totally ignore them. "If Love Is A Game, These Are The Rules," is a wonderful exception. Every man interested in learning how to find and maintain a long-lasting relationship should read this book. More importantly, it should be read, reread and discussed by both partners, as often as questions or issues arise in the relationship. Cherie Carter Scott doesn't mince words; examples are short and to the point; each chapter covers a major rule so it is easy to follow and return to for a refresher. Too many of us, men and women, have been too ignorant, too disinterested, too willing to enter relationships based upon the wrong assumptions and expectations. This book lights the path towards establishing relationships that can grow and withstand the changes time will inevitably bring. Good luck...

Love Potion # 8
At times, even the most successful people in business... can be failures at love. That's often because, once the web has been spun, the enchantment put in place, that spell we call "love" has been cast, people usually throw all cares to the wind in hope of finding something that is everlasting. In the follow-up book to her widely acclaimed title, "If Life is a Game, These are the Rules", Dr. Cherie Carter-Scott has identified some basic knowledge that can help a person find, create and maintain authentic, long-lasting relationships. Some of these truisms may seem familiar, but as is the case with her other titles, a reader is bound to find a gem of wisdom, or two that may change their perspective and impact their lives.

Like many other types of relationships, Dr. Carter identifies the element of 'excellent communication' as a necessary ingredient to success. Knowing what you want to communicate, 'releasing' the emotion surrounding the message you wish to convey, expressing your feelings without passing judgement, and choosing a right time and place are details that are commonly highlighted in this book. In fact, communication is a common denominator that is weaved throughout this title.

An interesting chapter is entitled 'Partnering is a Choice'. It seems simple enough, yet it is extremely powerful to understand that the choice to be in a meaningful relationship is up to you and you alone. Some people may have some kind of a mental block or fear. Fear of losing his/ her bachelorhood, fear of rejection, fear of not being good enough, fear of being hurt, fear that they'll end up divorced like their parents, fear... fear... fear. It is this fear that projects the kind of energy that attracts the wrong type of people, and it is up to each of us individually to recognize this process and redirect the course we are navigating. To find a soulmate, one must address their fears, accept and love themselves, and make a conscious decision to be receptive to a significant other.

Once you have found someone, the real work has just begun. The author spells out the importance of nurturing your relationship in Chapter 8, in what's, arguably, the best part of the sermon. As we know, many relationships lose their 'shine' or luster when both parties get so involved with their every day life that they lose the perspective of what brought them together in the first place. The author reminds us that relationships are like gardens... ever growing and requiring attention. We need to make a conscious decision to tend to our 'garden' on a daily basis. Try and have a daily check in, the author suggests. In fact, it is prescribed that couples should schedule a periodical relationship tune-up. This is a time when both parties can express how they feel about their relationship, their needs and wants. A time to basically just step outside and analyze what components of the relationship bring a couple happiness, and where they feel some areas may be somewhat deficient. This scheduled tune-up helps one avoid being in a relationship that just goes sour with the parties never knowing exactly where it all went wrong! Simple wisdom with profound effects. Mark it down... 3,000 miles... take the car in to have the oil changed and make time for a relationship tune-up... it's what the Doctor ordered.

Great book for anyone who is in love or wants to be....
I loved it, this is a very helpful book for anyone who is in a relationship or who wants to be in a successful relationship. It let's the reader know that they are not alone, many other couples have similar types of problems. The book gets the point across by using real life examples from other relationships. It helped me!

Recommended by breeders...
this book is one of the best books on the market in years. It is extremely well illustrated with gorgeous photos. It's easy to read and understand and yet is as comprehensive as the Cairn Terrier is complex. It belongs on the holiday list of every current or prospective Cairn owner.

Why doesn't this book come up with the initial search?
All the reviews you post on this book are five stars. Why doesn't it come up when I search for Cairn Terriers? I had to search for Cairns and the author to get it to come up on your search. This is by far one of the best books I've seen on the Cairn Terrier in years. People won't be able to judge for themselves if they aren't offered the opportunity to buy it. It's extremely well illustrated and informative, has many excellent photos and, as a breeder of Cairn Terriers, I feel it should be on every Cairn owner's holiday list.

All around great book!
Not only does this make a great coffee table book with beautiful, high quality photos, but it is chock full of good information about this lovely breed. The section on grooming is especially informative.

Wise Children
Published in Hardcover by Chatto & Windus (January, 1991)
Author: Angela Carter
Average review score:

Hilarious, Dramatic, Different
Wise Children is a funny yet touching tale of the lives of a theatrical family. Narrated by one of the Chance twins, Dora, it charts the ups-and-downs of the twins' lives, as well as encounters with both loved and hated relatives; with almost every member of the vast family a theatrical performer.

I've read quite a few Angela Carter books, and (while Wise Children is still written in that unmistakable Carter style) it seems far more light-hearted than, for example: Love or The Magic Toyshop, and has a completely different vocabulary, as Carter adopts the voice of Dora Chance -- deliciously witty, with a strong feminist tone, relatively simple vocab, and an entirely unrelenting appetite for drama.
I was a little dubious about reading Wise Children, as the blurb implied a knowledge of Shakepeare would be beneficial when it came to understanding the book, and that the multiple sets of twins and family secrets would become highly confusing. While any subtle Shakepeare references (aside from the obvious) went right over my head, it seems that they played a minor part in the book, as it's full of raucous wit, bubbling personality, theatrical dramatics, and an inexhaustable thirst for life. As for the numerous characters and their relation to each other: Carter manages to evoke such a vivid picture and to bestow each character with such simplistic, unique features, that you become invovled in the Hazard/Chance story (therby avoiding any confusion.)
While the ending to this book seemed a little too good to be true, it fitted in with the unrealistic aspect of the book, and the dramatic nature of nearly every major character.

A great read (as with almost every Angela Carter book) I highly recommend Wise Children.

Make no mistake, this is Carter's piece de resistance
Angela Carter's last novel,"Wise Children", may well have been the crowning glory to her illustrious career as a fiction writer. It's a coup de grace and her piece de resistance. You don't need to be an afficionado of Shakespeare to appreciate the dazzling humour of Carter's story and celebration of "wrong-side-of-the-trackness" in a theatrical family of multigenerational twins (the Hazards) or thrill to their cross-Atlantic adventures but it'll surely heighten your sense of pleasure if you're familiar with the Bard's comic characters and able to pick them out from among the novel's fabulously diverse and colourful personalities. The novel starts on a promising note and quickly settles into a swinging groove, which Carter skillfully sustains with a momentum that just builds and builds, constantly hitting new highs just when you think it can't get any better. A diabolically clever mix of pathos and humour maintains the balance between realism and a sense of the ridiculous which is unmistakeably Carter. Her legendary tongue twisting, mind bending, linguistic pyrotechnics is in full flower and display throughout. She's in top form and those familiar with the Bard's "King Lear", "Winter's Tale" and "Tempest", among others, will delight in the resonance that the novel's many references evoke. The denouement is also a masterful sleight of hand that is distinctively Carter. "Wise Children" is quite the most fascinating and entertaining novel I have read and enjoyed all year. I finished the book with such a good feeling it carried me for days. This is an "absolute must" for those who love contemporary literature of the finest quality. Don't miss it !

genuine genius
angela carter was the finest english novelist of the last half century. and her reputation can only continue to grow. she continued to improve throughout her career, and wise children, her last novel before her premature demise in 1992.

wise children is typical of carter's style. she mixes the very high with the very low. an immensely intellectual writer, she nevertheless enjoys a good bawdy farce and a smattering of innuendo. this novel (for a plot summary see elsewhere) is a jaw-dropping display in the use and manipulation of language. there is sheer joy in every word. carter's confidence in her own wit was at a premium. it reads in one way as a feminist re-working of shakespeare; all the bard's devices are in view but it is all carried off with such vim and vigour and a deceptively throw-away attitude that it is a joy to read. this is a novel that demands to be read and re-read. all human life is here. get it on your bookshelf now!

Clients Forever: How Your Clients Can Build Your Business for You
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill (April, 2003)
Authors: Doug Carter and Jennifer Green
Average review score:

A "must read" -- more than once!
If you just "read" the book, you'll miss the power. You must also DO the exercises as they come up, and allow yourself to become the type of person that Doug describes. So if you're brave enough to truly "change" you'll no doubt get the results Doug describes.

I've done the work, and begun to see the results, and can tell you it's well worth the effort. I bought a case of these books and mailed them to 20 of my friends. Several have called me to say thanks... genuinely.

My genuine thanks for Doug for sharing his wisdom with us in this concise, easy to read and fun format. It's like you're there with him in a workshop, which I've had the privilege of doing also.

What a great book!
What a great book! Specific, step-by-step instructions that have REALLY worked for me. Learn how to create an extraordinarly successful business. Work only with clients who feel like friends, stay with you forever, and tell everyone they know about your services. Work less hours - - but earn more (a lot more). This book is unlike all other "selling" books I've read. It is the best book I've read, and has given me tremendous insight.

Warning: THIS BOOK COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
This book is not about sales training. Forget everything you have been taught about sales, closing funnels, and how to acquire clients. The message and the exercises in "Clients Forever" will transform you, your business and how you attract the type of clients that you want to work with. Permanent change is the natural outcome of the exercises and insights into who you are and how you show up in the world, when they are applied to yourself and to the relationships with your clients. Most importantly, your clients will have the opportunity to work with someone who is truly client centered and principled.

I was very impressed by the section on intuition, in chapter 11. Coming from a background in mathematics, I am too familiar with how logic and reasoning can destroy flashes and moments of insight. Doug Carter gives tremendous credibility to intuitive awareness. He teaches us that our own intuition is the most powerful tool that we own for evaluating how our clients feel in their relationships with us. This is very powerful stuff. I sincerely hope that someday he will dedicate an entire book to this topic and relate it to how we are "being" with our clients, ourselves, and everyone we know.

Out of My Life and Thought: An Autobiography (Albert Schweitzer Library)
Published in Paperback by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (November, 1998)
Authors: Albert Schweitzer, Antje Bultmann Lemke, Jimmy Carter, and Rhena Schweitzer Miller
Average review score:

For students of this great mind, this is a must read.
There is no better short book available on the mind and thoughts of Albert Schweitzer than this book. His theology on Jesus and Paul, his thoughts on Bach and organ building, his philosophy on Reverence for Life are all laid out here.

George Marshall (see my review of Marshall's excellent biography: Schweitzer) once asked Dr. Schweitzer what professors would best provide him an education on Schweitzer's thoughts. He replied that Marshall should not go to professors but "read my books! No one can express the ideas of a man as well as he has expressed them himself.... read my books".

Bob Frost of "Biography Magazine" once wrote, "Albert Schweitzer is not exactly forgotten today, but his name won't crop up in daily conversation. Fifty years ago, though, people talked about Schweitzer all the time. An American magazine selected him, ahead of Albert Einstein, as the "world's greatest living nonpolitical person." He was the subject of an Oscar-winning documentary, won the Nobel Peace Prize, and appeared on the cover of Time magazine. Fueled by idealism and burning spiritual passion, this medical missionary led one of the most intense lives of the 20th century."

Be apprized that "Out of my Life and Thoughts" is not an easy read. Dr. Schweitzer's theology and philosophy, though dense, is not incomprehensible. And due to the translation from French to English, you many find yourself reading a passage multiple times to get the gist his thoughts.

That said, for students of this great mind, this is a must read. Strongly recommended. 4.5 stars.

Schweitzer's life and thought:
"Since my first years at the university I had grown increasingly to doubt the idea that mankind is steadily moving toward improvement. My impression was that the fire of its ideas was burning out without anyone noticing or worrying about it. ... What was just and equitable seemed to be pursued with only lukewarm zeal. I noticed a number of symptoms of intellectual and spiritual fatigue in this generation that is so proud of its achievements."
Albert Schweitzer was a man of action -- humanitarian, theologian, historian, musician, musical technologist, medical doctor, author, philosopher, missionary, professor, environmentalist, prisoner of war, recipient of the Nobel Prize. He writes an interesting autobiography, which is not surprising when one considers the breadth of his interests and of his achievements in science, the humanities and the arts. In his later years he was perhaps the most widely admired and respected person in the Western world.
Jimmy Carter offers a foreword in this volume; it is economical, a mere six sentences. Schweitzer's philosophical work may be well studied, but does not particularly distinguish itself in this volume (with some notable exceptions). His theological work (i.e., Christology) is generally questionable -- bound to Enlightenment fallacies of a "historical Jesus." I was happy to be concurrently reading the thoughts of a far better theologian, CS Lewis, on the idea of "discovering" a "historical" Jesus. While some of Schweitzer's ideas are [rightly] not highly regarded, his "life and thought" makes for unusually interesting biography. His "reverence for life" precept certainly has great value, but seems to be a less profoundly unique idea than he held it to be. Perhaps my view here is merely ignorant of the world in which Schweitzer lived.
He considered this book to be his best, or at least his preferred, writing, but if you are going to read only one book considering theological and historical exegetics, this is probably the wrong book. On the other hand, Schweitzer makes many observations cleanly and powerfully: "Our world rots in deceit. Our very attempt to manipulate truth itself brings us to ... [a truth] based on a skepticism that has become belief... It is superficial and inflexible." Kant had observed the intellectual paralysis of such "a skepticism that has become belief," but Schweitzer goes further, recognizing it as an even deeper spiritual paralysis.
While Schweitzer's Christology is, at the least, arguable, his firm commitment to Christ's commandment of love is a strong example of the Christian life led in the light of its Teacher's example. The author is [rightly] given to referring to Christianity as "the religion of love." In this aspect, Schweitzer at once offers the non-Christian a true image of Christianity and offers the Christian an important, if gentle, reminder. "[God] announces Himself in us as the will to love. The First Cause of Being, as He manifests Himself in nature, is to us always impersonal. To the First Cause of Being that is revealed to us in the will to love, however, we relate as to an ethical personality." And quoting Paul: "Love never faileth: but where there be knowledge it shall be done away."

An inspiring journey with a true disciple of Christ
Albert Schweitzer was an acclaimed organist, a world authority on Bach, a church pastor and principal of a theological seminary, a university professor with a doctorate in philosophy, and above all a humanitarian. This book gives a stunning account of how he grew into his ideals and I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in ethics or philosophy. I was left with an urge to read more about this true human, who believed and practiced the basic principle of goodness, as I finished reading the book. Schweitzer's faith in what he believes in and how he transforms it to the needy is absolutely inspiring. The epilogue of the book is very thought provoking as it gives a clear idea of his vision and the relevance of it in the world we live in.

Backstage handbook : an illustrated almanac of technical information
Published in Unknown Binding by Broadway Press ()
Author: Paul Carter
Average review score:

A theatrical reference for the real world.
I'm a "theatrical rat" and have found Paul Carter's book very useful both in theater and at home. The book was intended to be a source of information, both mainstream and obscure, for the technical theater community. However, if one needs a survival guide for any purpose, The Backstage Handbook will do the job. Buy it now. *****(out of 5)..

A Standard in need of a new Printing
I've used this book as a 'bible' for ten years. There is nothing like it. It is concise, exact and obviously created by actual working live production personnel. Paul Carter fills a much needed lack of reference material in the production field. The illustrations/drawings are more than worth the price of admission. It is most unfortunate that Paul is not here to create new editions. Please keep this in print!

The Tech Library
Of course this book is great, but for the ultimate reference library backstage, please search out a copy of PocketRef or DeskRef. They're the same book, just one is desk size, the other...well, I'll let you figure this one out. Trust me. DeskRef has everything. It isn't geared at theatre directly, so it has lots of formulas that "come up" backstage in those situations where real world advise is needed quickly. Get a copy. Please. You will thank me

Infinite Wealth: A New World of Collaboration and Abundance in the Knowledge Era
Published in Paperback by Butterworth-Heinemann (June, 1999)
Author: Barry C. Carter
Average review score:

Infinite Wealth - Not exactly as you might think
Assuming that Futurists do their homework right, one should be able to act on their insights with a fair degree of confidence. With "Infinite Wealth" the same trending snapshots caught by noted futurists such as Faith Popcorn, Alvin Toffler and John Naisbitt take on more personalized dimensions. Barry Carter opens up before his readers doors to personal fulfillment, inviting them to join the driving forces of 21st Century new economies. If ever there was insider information worth its weight in gold, this is it.

Whether or not you are already a pioneer of the emerging Free Agent Nation, this book is a must read! If you are one of tens-of-millions sensing that the world you thought you knew is changing, not certain where you might fit in, I highly recommend "Infinite Wealth" as a beginner's guide to learning. But be forewarned! "Infinite Wealth" is not really about material wealth - per say, and if that is what you seek...well then maybe you should read the book. Otherwise, you may never know what hit you.

This ties it all together,a guide toward the new economy.
"Infinite Wealth" should, but won't for obvious reasons, become required reading for all students at the High School and College levels. Anyone beyond these levels of formal education, who is in search for a deeper and more stable level of personal freedom for themselves and their descendants, should also read this book, sooner rather than later. It would also be a good idea for parents to encourage their children to read this book since most education systems continue to block them from gaining this kind of knowledge. "Infinite Wealth" clearly indentifies the political, social, economic and diverse cultural problems we are presently experiencing around the world and outlines the reasons it is urgent that solutions are implemented. Barry Carter has obviously contributed thousands of hours of thought and conscientious research in preparing to write this brilliant book. He has keenely focused his study on the history of our evolving world economies and the political systems they control, while searching for the potential solutions he has outlined. He provides a clear path, for those who share his concerns or accept his premis, for people to work together toward the creation of a better world. A world which for the first time can provide all people a legitimate chance to have a happy life, with true liberty and justice. Mr. Carter correctly identifies our "Free Market", "Free Enterprise" systems for what they are and points out why the current systems are not open, much less free, to the masses. He then goes on to illustrate how and why all of our current problems will only get worse as social knowledge continues to expand, if a new economic system is not divised to open economic freedom and opportunity to the masses around the world. There is hope and "Infinite Wealth" helps open the door toward future change for all who are willing to walk through that door to help pioneer the greatest transition in the history of human existance.

Positive, Powerful, Sweeping = I loved it!
In 'Infinite Wealth', Barry Carter has outlined and pinpointed the elements of a Win/Win World.  As a whole, he has defined a grand, uplifting vision around which the people of the world can unite.  Upon reading I experienced a surge of synthesis and integration that propelled me forward in the development of The Uni-v.e.r.s.e. I highly recommend 'Infinite Wealth' for anyone in business or not, who wishes to grasp the future and succeed in the present.

Prelude to Glory: Our Sacred Honor
Published in Audio Cassette by Bookcraft Pubs (September, 1997)
Author: Ron Carter
Average review score:

Prelude To Glory #1-Our Sacred Honor-Hey Grandpa!-Great!
The book Our Sacred Honor, written by Ron Carter, is very well put together. It is humorous frequently, and is very entertaining. For example, at one part it is describing how this great, powerful, huge army of British is marching to Concord...and then they fall right into a bog. There are many funny parts in this book that I would want to share. It is a riot! I really loved this book, not only because of the humorous parts, but also because it is very descriptive, and the words sound so good together. There is only one thing I don't like was the gore. It is not very often, but at times it is nauseating. I really like the way he words some sentences like, 'He jerked the reins to stop and the horse battled for breath.' It is descriptive and the words work together like a river going to sea.
The story is centered around a family who is on the colonial side-the eldest son (Matthew) is engaged to a lovely young woman, and the eldest daughter is stunned by this young lieutenant on the British side.
It is packed with action, war and adventure. Our Sacred Honor is only the first fantastic volume of a whole series by Ron Carter (my grandpa!). These books are very well written and should be read time and time again. Enjoy!

Prelude to Glory (All 3 volumes)
This is by far the most excellent series of historically based fiction that I have ever read. I was there with the soldiers as they were fighting for the freedom and liberty that we hold so dear today. I had to put an extra blanket on my bed while I was reading about the conditions that were suffered through during the winter. I was ducking for cover as the cannons thundered and the musket balls whistled past. The interlacing of histroical fact with a very few fictional characters is masterful. Mr. Carter should be congratulated on bringing the struggle of the American Revolution to life in an entirely readable manner. I wish I could have studied American history in high school using Mr. Carter's works, I certainly would have done better and enjoyed the class much more. Even if you do not read them for the historical significance, you should read them for the enjoyment of reading a very good series of books.

Prelude to Glory series of books
I read the first three volums of this series, and they were spell binding. After reading each of these books, I shared them with my friends, who also couldn't put them down. I am now hoping that there will be a vol. 4. For any one who wants to learn about for formation of our country, these books are a must. I highly recomend them for any one who is a member of the Daughters of the American Revelution. Understanding just what it took for gain the freedom of the United States, will give you a better appreciation of what it took to make our country free.
